American Indian workshop promotes dialogue on breaking stereotypes
An Anishinaabe prophecy called the Seven Fires offers seven predictions of what the future would bring, and "the time of the seventh fire" can either lead to a worldly sense of community and unity or the destruction of humanity. The American Indian Studies and Education workshop, held on Nov. 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the UW–Madison Red Gym, will explore that tradition and others in the hope of leading participants down a road toward unity and community.
‘Expand Your Horizons’ gets young women thinking about science careers
In the early 1990s, Cara Wall Scheffler attended an Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) conference as a middle school student in Seattle. She met talented scientists, got a taste of electrical engineering by making extension cords, and saw that a career in science was a definite option. Now, Wall Scheffler will be returning to EYH, as one of 65 presenters in a daylong workshop on Saturday, Nov. 5 at Union South at UW–Madison.
‘Community’ encourages contribution to inclusive campus
A unique problem about crises is that they often hold valuable lessons. “I asked myself what kinds of things create community and I came up with a sad answer. Crisis creates community,”says Bernice Durand, associate vice chancellor for diversity and climate. “How do we generate and sustain that bonding, which grows out of the thought, empathy and generosity of a crisis?”Durand posed this query among many other questions to faculty, staff and students last week at the Multicultural Campus Forum on Creating Community held at the Memorial Union.
Counseling psychology honored for minority achievement
The Department of Counseling Psychology in the University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Education has received the 2005 Suinn Minority Achievement Award from the American Psychological Association (APA) in recognition of the department's exemplary recruitment, retention and graduation of racial and ethnic minority students.
