McGovern to deliver Kastenmeier Lecture, examine Iraq war

November 8, 2005 By Dennis Chaptman

Former U.S. Sen. George McGovern will discuss “The Iraq War: Lessons from the Past,” in the UW Law School‘s Robert W. Kastenmeier Lecture on Monday, Nov. 14.

The talk, presented this year in conjunction with the Wisconsin Union Directorate Distinguished Lecture Series, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union Theater, 800 Langdon St.

McGovern, the 1972 Democratic nominee for president, campaigned on a liberal reform platform that called for an end to U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War and was defeated by President Richard M. Nixon. McGovern, a World War II bomber pilot, represented South Dakota in the House of Representatives for two terms before moving to the Senate, where he served until 1980.

Since 1998, McGovern has served as the U.S. representative to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization as special ambassador on hunger.

Tickets for the lecture are free and will be available only at the Union Theater Box Office beginning on Monday, Nov. 7. They are available first to those with valid UW–Madison identification or a Union membership card and there is a limit of one ticket per ID, up to four per person, if they show four IDs.

Remaining tickets will be made available to the general public on Thursday, Nov. 10 and will be available until 10 minutes prior to the lecture when any remaining seats will be made available to those without tickets. The box office is open from 11:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. weekdays and noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays.

The lecture is supported by a fund established to recognize Robert W. Kastenmeier, a UW Law School graduate who served in Congress from 1958-90. The Kastenmeier Fund was created to foster scholarship in the fields of intellectual property, corrections, administration of justice and civil liberties.
